Want to get in to ITSec? Get on Twitter
We’ve had a few emails recently from people asking ‘How to get in to the security industry’ and ‘How to learn more about security’ and overall just keep their finger on the pulse.
Along with get the right qualifications, read the write books, browse the right security blogs (we link to most of them!) as well as getting them selves to as many conferences and seminars for social networking I would say yourself on Twitter. You don’t have to tweet about every breath you take or donut you eat, you can even just stand in the virtual corner and just listen to what everyone has to say.
There is a lot said on Twitter often before it even hits the new headlines as well as a lot of things which should hit the new headlines but don’t.
Granted your not going to become an expert in everything simply by watching Twitter and you will spend time sorting out the trash, but over time you will find the gems. These are the gems which will give you the insight which mite not even be possible without Twitter and the opinions and experience of the professionals around the world.
If you do find your finding more trash than gems, then start filtering those out that don’t interest you. But don’t forget to keep an eye out for new additions.
These are all the conversation that once happened between people standing around conferences and events which maybe only occur 2 or three times a year. But now with Twitter, it has enabled these conversations that happen on a daily basis around the world to be available to everyone in order to be just enough to trigger a deeper dialogue.
If the idea of putting your undeveloped opinion out there unnerves you, don’t force it, it will come with time. All of a sudden you’ll see a tweet which you can comment on and roll with it.
Until then, sit back and soakĀ up the comments, thoughts, opinions and conversations being had. Following the links the pro’s postĀ and you’ll begin to find new tools and resources to follow to keep up to date with the latest news. These will often lead you down routes you may not have even considered and can always be useful for references and quotations for assignments and papers as those who aren’t on Twitter or who haven’t seen the link may not know about it. Adding that bit extra individually to your work.
If you would like a start up list of who to follow on Twitter, firstly start following US, obviously and secondly check out our post on ‘Who to follow on Twitter in the ITSec Industry‘. We’ve spent countless hours searching for the gems.
