The BackTrack Dev team has worked furiously in the past months on BackTrack 5, code name “revolution”. Today, we are proud to release our work to the public, and then rest for a couple of weeks.

This new revision has been built from scratch, and boasts several major improvements over all our previous releases.

Based on Ubuntu Lucid LTS. Kernel 2.6.38, patched with all relevant wireless injection patches. Fully open source and GPL compliant. Head down to our downloads page to get your copy now!

We know that there are probably many questions about BackTrack, to answer some of your questions here are some exciting points:

  • Our release will start on May 10th (don’t bug us about the timezone), and will primarily be available for download via torrents. This is to reduce the massive load on our mirrors for the first few hours.
  • As time progresses into  the release , we will then allow direct downloads from our mirrors.
  • We will have KDE (4.6) and Gnome (2.6) Desktop environment flavours
  • 32 and 64 bit support
  • A basic ARM BackTrack image which can be chrooted into from android enabled devices. (hopefully released May 10th)
  • The 32 and 64 bit images support “Forensics Mode”, which boots a forensically sound instance of BackTrack and “Stealth mode”, which boots without generating network traffic.
  • All support for Backtrack 4 will end on May 10th, 2011 and BackTrack 4 will not be available for download from our official mirrors from that date onwards.
  • And yes, Metasploit 3.7.0 *was* packaged into BT5.

You can download a PodCast from the guys over at Social-Engineer who interviewed the development team of BackTrack 5.

As part of the launch of BackTrack 5, Infected Mushroom agreed to work with the BT team and use their awesome tunes. As part of this, you can download some of their MP3’s and the BackTrack Wallpapers here.

  • Known issues –
    • Black Screens – BT5 TIP#1 – Black Screens with BT5 boot ? Use “no DRM” or “Debug” Boot mode.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank several key individuals who have helped make this release possible:

  • Offensive-Security who have played a major role in development and funding of our project.
  • Devon Kearns – A new member in our BackTrack team who single-handedly covered more packages than the whole team put together. At some stage we considered renaming the release to “dookie-track”.
  • Shadz – Master of the dragon and creator of the promo movie. Check him out at
  • Digip – Master of our website and dang good artist –
  • Elwood – For getting an awesome forensics environment up. Thanks!
  • Mister_X – For going through our wireless setup and making sure everything was sparkling.
  • Bolexxx – our torrent and download master. Your download is due to him.

We are all looking forward towards the release, and will resurface from our bunkers on May 10th … Bring on the Revolution!
